Suddenly, machines were not just following orders; they could learn patterns in human language like never before. The introduction of the transformer architecture allowed for developments like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which delivers near-human fluency in conversation. Yet, this wasn’t the only pathway being explored.

Two Roads to AGI: Language Models vs. Whole Brain Emulation

When we talk about AGI, two main approaches surface. On one hand, we have large language models (LLMs), which are trained on vast amounts of text data. These models demonstrate incredible skills in various tasks—everything from coding to creative writing. But here’s the catch: they lack grounding. Unlike us, they don’t interact with the physical world or possess a memory of past experiences. Can true intelligence exist without such grounding?

Now, let’s look at the other side: whole brain emulation (WBE). This ambitious endeavor seeks to replicate a human brain at a microscopic level, creating a complete computational model. Imagine if we could scan every neuron in the brain, capturing not just its structure but also its inner workings. The potential result? Not just a brain-like machine, but a continuation of a person’s consciousness, complete with their memories and personal identity.

This isn’t just a theory; top researchers like Anders Sandberg and Nick Bostrom have laid out the roadmap for this. But here’s the paradox: while LLMs seem more practical and accessible, WBE—despite its sci-fi allure—remains shrouded in uncertainty.

The Financial Stakes

Let’s talk numbers. Building AI systems isn’t just a scientific endeavor; it’s a financial gamble. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Google plans to invest a staggering $15 billion in AI infrastructure in India over the next five years. Meanwhile, Meta is pouring $14.3 billion into its pursuit of “superintelligence.” In contrast, the cost for initiatives like the Human Brain Project (HBP)—which received just €1 billion—looks meager. It tells you a lot about where the investment focus is headed.

The stakes are high, with firms investing in AI tech seeing increasing returns. Epoch AI reports spending on machine learning models is skyrocketing at a rate of 2.4 times per year! However, this also means that the pressure to innovate is equally intense. Investors want results, and fast.

The Philosophical Divide

So, what does it all mean? LLMs push us to think of intelligence in an abstract way—cognition as something that can emerge from patterns in language, while WBE grounds us back to biology. It begs the question: Can we truly replicate the complexities of the human mind?

If LLMs offer a top-down approach, WBE is bottom-up, emphasizing the biological essence of thought. This philosophical divide is vital, especially when considering how we define intelligence. Can we truly disentangle intelligence from our lived experiences?

Bridging the Gap

Is it possible that these two paths could converge someday? As research in neuroscience progresses, insights could lead to better machine learning models, allowing us to decode the living brain’s intricacies. Perhaps the future lies not in purely engineered minds or purely biological models, but in a synthesis of both.
