Academic and Healthcare Leaders Join Forces
A new collaboration between the University of Houston and DHR Health is set to expand medical research and physician training opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley through the development of a dedicated research and education center. The initiative will connect academic resources with a major regional healthcare system, creating a hub designed to advance medical knowledge while strengthening healthcare services in South Texas.
Officials say the project will operate through the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston in partnership with DHR Health, one of the Valley’s largest hospital networks. Together, the institutions plan to establish a facility focused on clinical research, medical education, and collaboration between physicians, researchers, and medical students.
State Investment Supports Expansion
The initiative is supported by approximately $15 million in funding approved by the Texas Legislature, providing critical resources for launching the center and supporting its research and educational mission. State leaders have increasingly emphasized the importance of expanding medical infrastructure in South Texas, a region that has historically faced physician shortages and limited access to advanced research facilities.
