Having a pet and having children together is a great combination. If you have little ones at home, you’ve probably heard the phrase “Mom! I want a puppy!” and that’s when parents start to think about how they could adopt a furry friend, whether it would be a good idea to have one, or whether it would be beneficial for the little ones in the house  If you need some reasons and ideas to make the best decision, you can find out.

Whether you want a puppy, a cat, a parrot, or a fish, a pet can be a source of comfort and motivation for the family. There are many ways pets can be a source of support in building a mentally healthier life. Before considering adopting a furry friend, remember that they require a lot of responsibility.

Pets and children benefit fental health

1. Increase self-confidence

A study by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry shows that having feelings of love for pets can contribute to developing self-confidence in children. Positive relationships with pets can help foster trusting relationships with others.  A good relationship with a pet can help develop nonverbal communication, compassion, and empathy. Pets also provide unconditional love, which is important for all children but especially helpful for those struggling with issues like depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

2. Promotes organization and responsibility

Pets are a responsibility because, as living beings and now part of the family, they require daily care. This helps create structure and a routine for those who care for them. Establishing a schedule for you and your child to feed them, take them to the park, and clean up their waste will help develop responsible behaviors and provide a sense of organization for your little one. Organization is important for mental health. It creates stability and a sense of control over our lives. Reinforcing these behaviors in your child will help them handle complex situations where order and responsibility are practical.

3. Pets and children reduce anxiety and depression

Having a pet can reduce levels of depression and anxiety . This is because the comfort and companionship a pet provides can help us feel less alone. For many people, when their pet comes around, it serves as a reminder that they are not alone. Pets also provide a sense of purpose . If your pet shows that it loves you and depends on you, you’ll have a reason to do what you should or want to do. These situations make people feel like they have someone to support them and someone who is there for them.  On days when it’s hard to get out of bed, knowing that your pet needs you to get up and care for them provides motivation that can change your or your child’s perspective throughout the day.

4. Increases compassion and acceptance

When you adopt a puppy, for example, from a shelter, it’s a great way to save the life of an animal that hasn’t had a good time. If you decide you want a specific breed, or if your heart is set on the type of dog you had as a child, consider looking for one from a rescue foundation or a shelter for homeless animals. Either way, you should always thoroughly review the process for doing so , so talk to the shelter or breeder about each pet’s history and personality. This will help you care for them according to their unique needs and establish a closer relationship with them from the start.

5. Pets and children welcome the new member of the family
